AD Update:

Leveraging Individual Talent via Collaboration

Continuing in our breakdown of the 20 specific action steps that will help us turn our Strategic Plan into action, this week we’ll look more closely at items 6-8. These Action List items speak to our desire to leverage our individual talents and expertise by working with others to make greater impact. Not only are we individually responsible for developing and enhancing expertise, we are also charged with applying our individual talents in collaborative fashion with others to address challenges and opportunities facing individuals and communities with whom we partner. How? By working with others to engage in more relevant applied research and expanded programming.

Think of our CD Small Grants-funded efforts that have created partnerships with colleagues in SENR and strengthened relations with JobsOhio. Or look to our NCRCRD Small Grants-funded projects that have created new collaborative efforts with colleagues in other north-central states, for example. Our planned multi-state program retreat with colleagues from Kentucky, Illinois and Purdue June 2-4 is another way we can leverage our individual efforts as well.

We have and will continue to discuss the merits of and need for working with others across the wide spectrum of possible collaborators, and most of us have experience in doing so. Our challenge isn’t necessarily how we leverage our individual expertise in collaboration with others as much as it is (like most every one of the items on the Action List) how we can do it better.

Tribal Colleges and Universities seek VISTA Volunteers - Applications due February 10:

TCUs were created in response to the higher education needs of American Indians and generally serve geographically isolated populations that have no other means of accessing education beyond the high school level. TCUs received land‐grant status in the year 1994, which further positions them as core drivers of economic and community development. This project supports Tribal land‐grant institutional development in the areas of Economic Development, Healthy Futures and Environmental Stewardship. TCU/VISTAs will work with a Land‐Grant Tribal College or University to address the needs of the Tribal communities served by that institution.

Applications are due by February 10. Project start date is April 21. Apply to be a TCU/VISTA online (my.americorps.gov) or e‐mail (doivista@coalcountryteam.org) for more information.
