A Focus on e-Learning
As we continue to break down the 20 specific action steps that will help us turn our Strategic Plan into action, I’d like to focus today on e-learning (items 4, 5 and probably 13 too). Instructional content or learning experiences delivered or enabled by electronic technology are referred to as e-learning by the American Society for Training and Development. As you scan the literature on the topic, it is clear that e-learning is a fairly all-encompassing term that describes education that takes place via an online (in the broadest sense of the word) learning experience. No doubt this broad definition is helpful to us as we begin to inventory our efforts involving e-learning.
Many of us are currently using the ever-growing variety of electronic tools to enhance Extension programs. Some examples include our use of electronic newsletters, program websites, teleconferences, webinars, social media and our self-produced videos. As we move into the future, however, I challenge us to conceptualize our individual creative and scholarly outputs in ways that they can stand alone and be part of a larger package. For example:
- How does my instructional video tie into my website, my blog, my tweets and my future-scheduled webinar?
- How do all of these pieces and parts of what could become an e-learning ‘module’ support and complement the day-long, face-to-face, hands-on educational program that I have planned?
- How do all these pieces come together in an all-out online course? Moodle (the platform used by eXtension) is one tool for organizing your various outputs and facilitating online learning.
- How have you used electronic technologies in your teaching events?
- How can you incorporate what you have learned to do it better?
Extension Strategic Plan – Action List
- Understand full range of Extension in Ohio
- Learn program needs
- Prioritize programs, efforts, and audiences
- Inventory e-Learning modules
- Create e-Learning modules (10% increase annually)
- Align applied research with Discovery Themes
- Increase creative and scholarly outputs of a collaborative nature
- Engage in interdisciplinary/cross-program/multi-state/inter-institutional efforts
- Evaluate teaching (face-to-face, via distance/webinar, etc.)
- Create and use evaluation tools for programs
- Document efforts via RiV
- Communicate impact via various media (e.g., micro-blog, blog, webpage, etc.)
- Use social media to extend reach
- Track reach of social media
- Increase extramural funding by 5% (annually)
- Increase contributions to CD endowment/development account by 5% (annually)
- Create and implement comprehensive marketing plan
- Focus on improving core competencies
- Participate in a diversity training (annually)
- Implement OSUE coaching and mentoring protocols
Updated Map of Extension Regions
An updated map of the new Extension regions as of February 1 is now available. OSU Extension has changed from three regions to five regions, with two EERAs (Extension Education and Research Areas) in four of the regions and one EERA in the Central Region. SENR Spring Seminar Series Lectures - January 30 & February 6:
Join the School of Environment and Natural Resources (SENR) for their Spring 2014 Seminar Series. OEE Lecture: Solving our Global Environmental Crisis - January 31:
The Office of Energy and Environment (OEE) will present a public lecture on Friday, January 31, from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Cartoon Room at the Ohio Union. A reception will follow. Peter F. Sale, a coral reef ecologist with the Institute for Water, Environment & Health at United Nations University, predicts his coral reefs are likely to disappear from our planet by 2050. Join a discussion of whether we will solve our global environmental crisis…and will we do so in time to save coral reefs? Read more at: oee.osu.edu.
‘Paper and Bytes’ Managing Public Records Workshop - February 12:
As a public institution, Ohio State must comply with laws governing public records. Participants in this workshop, offered on Wednesday, February 12, from 9 to 11 a.m. at 1590 N. High St, Suite 430, will become more knowledgeable about university policies, legal requirements and best practices concerning the retention, management and disposition of records in their care. 2014 Poverty Summit - March 22:

Public Issues Leadership Development Conference - April 6 - 9:
|The Public Issues Leadership Development (PILD) Conference registration site is now available. The conference will be held April 6 - 9 at the Westin Alexandria in Alexandria, VA. An informational brochure is also posted online. Early bird registration ends March 7, at which time the hotel block also closes. After March 7, the hotel conference rate/room block is not available.|

Outreach and Engagement Forum - May 1
Call for Posters due February 21:
The 2nd Annual Outreach and Engagement Forum will take place on May 1 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Ohio Union Archie Griffin Ballroom. The Forum is an opportunity to interact with Ohio State’s outreach and engagement community, share your outreach and engagement work and make connections with potential collaborators. If you are interested in displaying a poster at the Forum, complete the online proposal submission form by February 21. Please note that space at the Forum is limited, and it is a competitive selection process in which not all proposals will be accepted for presentation. The Office of Outreach and Engagement will produce a poster (design and printing) for accepted proposals at no charge to the presenter. Innovative Models for Outdoor Programming In-Service - March 28

|If the great outdoors is ever your classroom, then spend a day with other professionals in Extension and beyond (e.g., park districts, schools, camps, outdoor recreation facilities, etc.) to share your innovative models for outdoor programming, as well as to learn and network. This in-service, which will provide a venue for coming together to learn about innovative programming approaches, funding strategies and partnerships, will be held Friday, March 28, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lodge at Sawmill Creek Resort in Huron, OH. Cost is $75 per person.|

Outreach and Engagement Recognition Award Nominations due February 14:
The offices of Outreach and Engagement, International Affairs, Student Life and Undergraduate Education and the Service-Learning Initiative have joined together to recognize faculty, staff and students with the University Outreach and Engagement Recognition Awards program. Awards will be presented in the community engagement, international engagement, service learning, staff, student, student group and community partner categories. New OSU Text Guidelines now Available:
Our 'One university' vision requires one copy style to convey our key messages most effectively. To that end, all communicators at The Ohio State University use Associated Press style for content that promotes the university. Examples of what is included in the editorial style guidelines are:
- no parentheses around area codes
- no http:// or www. in front of urls
- lowercase and periods for a.m. and p.m.

USAC Applications for 2014-2017 Term due March 21:
The University Staff Advisory Committee is seeking motivated staff to serve during the 2014-2017 term. USAC’s mission is to provide a forum through which university staff can raise, discuss and make recommendations on university issues. USAC is open to CCS, A&P and Senior A&P staff.
