AD Update:

Preparing for the CD Program Retreat

At the Galaxy IV capnote presentation, conference participants heard conference closing remarks from FAES V-P and Dean, Bruce McPheron. He mentioned our 100th anniversary on the horizon for 2014 and noted that Extension would not be celebrating another 100th birthday unless we more fully engaged in the ‘disruptive change’ process. He went on to discuss his ‘Top 10 List’ of eight items that Extension (nationally) needs to address in this disruptive change process and indicated that he hopes for an ongoing national dialogue to commence in the coming months to begin to address them. If you weren’t able to hear the presentation at Galaxy, here are the eight areas very briefly:

  1. Staffing – there are many types of Extension professionals…what are the ideal proportions of each?
  2. Delivery – our efforts must continually adapt to integrate new methods and technologies.
  3. Funding – the traditional funding model is not sustainable.
  4. Funder expectations – do we know what funders want from us? Can we meet all stakeholder expectations?
  5. Program scope – on what are we to focus?
  6. Reputation – we are more than service… how does Extension fit into the priorities of the larger University?
  7. Competition – Extension has plenty of competitors… how do we learn from them?
  8. Marketing – we can do better at communicating our impact.

While most if not all of these are topics we have discussed previously at some point, we have not discussed them from the ‘disruptive change’ perspective(s) shared in the 12-page article linked above. Please take some time to review the paper and expect a final reminder of retreat homework details on Wednesday. I think we are going to have a fun couple of days at next week’s Retreat!
