NCRCRD Small Grants Update

Our last issue mentioned opportunities to foster multi-state collaboration. It also briefly highlighted a few examples of our recent multi-state efforts. Our push at last fall’s unit retreat to think more about working with peers in other states to create innovative programs and add value to our existing efforts led to the submittal of three well-conceived and written proposals. Two of the proposals were awarded funding by the NCRCRD board. I am pleased beyond words at how we came together in teams to craft three high-quality proposals for submission. Proposals selected for funding in this round are in the areas of BR&E (“Elevating and Expanding the Traditional Business Retention & Expansion Program” with collaborators from Purdue and Iowa State) and Energy Development (“Preparing Communities for Shale Development through Sustainable Planning” with collaborators from North Dakota and South Dakota Extension). Inviting Scott Loveridge (NCRCRD Director) to our retreat gave us some valuable insights as well and as of today, he informed me that “Everything seems to be proceeding without any problems, but I have no official ‘go’ yet.” To learn more about how these small grants work, contact our most recent recipient Eric Romich ( who was awarded funds in the last round for the work described in the proposal titled, "Utility Scale Renewable Energy Development - Project Siting & Conflict Resolution."

Sandy is putting final touches on our Summer issue of the CD Quarterly News. We are highlighting our efforts in the area of Leadership and Organizational Development this issue. Summer Unit Meeting Recap

Finally, I’d like to thank again Cindy Bond, Mike Lloyd, and Eric Romich for arranging the Summer Unit Meeting focused on Energy Development in Harrison County on June 26 (and Wooster the following day). If you haven’t already provided evaluation feedback, you can do so by responding to the web-based questionnaire. Ask an Expert Training - July 16 and 18:

Four 30-minute virtual training sessions will be held on July 16 (11 a.m. and 3 p.m.) and July 18 (11 a.m. and 3 p.m.) about eXtension's Ask an Expert and how to better use the system. All sessions contain the same content and will be held at:

Ohio Saves is an initiative to help all Ohioans save money, reduce debt, and build wealth. To reach this goal, America Saves offers a plethora of free resources and daily motivation for savers, as well as reporting for professionals. Webinar to discuss USDA Regional Hubs for Risk Adaptation and Mitigation to Climate Change - July 19:

The USDA invites you to participate in a webinar on Friday, July 19 from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. to discuss the establishment of seven USDA Regional Hubs for Risk Adaptation and Mitigation to Climate Change. This webinar is open to the public and is intended for interested parties and potential USDA partners, including representatives from academic institutions, farmer organizations, NGOs, the private sector, and the interested public. The meeting will address the rationale for establishing the USDA regional hubs; the expected benefits to farmers, ranchers, forest land owners and rural communities; and opportunities to partner with USDA. Microsoft Office Training Classes - Summer Session Begins August 5:

The following training classes are being offered for Summer Session:

  • Monday August 5 – Microsoft Access 2010 part 1 (This is NOT Access 4-H)
  • Monday August 12 – Microsoft Outlook 2010 part 2
  • Monday August 19 –Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 part 2
  • Monday August 26 – Microsoft Excel 2010 part 2

Microsoft Office 2010 classes cost $35 per person per class and are held in room 200 Kottman Hall. Classes will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a lunch break of one hour and additional breaks as needed. Please contact Bonnie Scranton ( to request enrollment. Save the Date - OSUE Annual Conference December 4:

OSU Extension's Annual Conference will be held on December 4 at the Ohio Union. The theme for this year's conference is Moving Forward, Looking Back: A celebration of history and possibility. Annual association meetings will be held December 3 at the Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center, and our CD unit meeting will be held that morning.



The Rural Essays Project Call for Submissions - Message of Intent due July 31:

The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis is seeking original material for a printed volume on life in smaller places in America. There are positive, forward-looking narratives about rural America that recognize the vital contribution that rural people and places make to national well-being and prosperity. The proposed table of contents includes:

  • Food - natural capital, innovation in agriculture and local food systems in rural places
  • Work – human capital, innovations in labor, jobs, livelihoods, productivity, economic development in rural places
  • Money – financial capital, innovations in finance, investment, lending, saving in rural places
  • Neighboring – social capital, innovations in leadership, collaboration, and community life in rural places

Deadline for submissions is September 15, with message of intent due July 31. Click here for more details about the process and criteria.



OSUE Strategic Plan and Structure Announcement - July 25:

A webinar will be held on July 25 from 10 to 11 a.m. to update the organization about progress on the strategic plan and upcoming adjustments to our regional structure, as well as our signature programs. There will be time for questions after the update. Look for meeting room instructions in your inbox by July 25. The presentation will also be recorded for those who are unable to join the meeting live. (Note: You might have July 19 held on your calendar for this event, so please release that date.)

Promotion and Tenure Dossiers due August 19:

Faculty dossiers are due to the department by August 19 and should be sent to Refer to the 2013-14 Faculty Guide to Promotion and Tenure for complete information.

Kimberly Roush begins as CD Interim Educational Technology Specialist:

Kimberly has officially begun her duties as our Interim Educational Technology Specialist. She introduced herself in an email earlier this month and is also listed on the CD Staff Page and the updated directory that was emailed to you at the end of May. We all look forward to working with Kimberly!

CD Program receives Innovative Grant Award:

Congratulations to Susan Colbert and her team for being awarded an FY14 Innovative Grant for Engaging Youth Leadership with Healthy Choice & Healthy Living: 4-H for REAL. They are off to a running start with club meetings, field trips, and lots of learning!

Changes to 2014 Health Plans:

Have you heard about the changes being made to Ohio State's 2014 medical plans? Do you know what steps you need to take to prepare for those changes?
