AD Update:

RiV:  A Useful Tool

Research in View (RiV, formerly known as OSU:pro) has been the focus of much discussion. In these updates we have noted its features for documenting your accomplishments as well as your goals and progress for your performance and professional development. We’ve discussed its ability to organize your teaching, scholarly and creative, and service contributions and accomplishments as well as generate Dossier Reports, Extension Annual Reports, and USDA Federal Reports, among others. During our quarterly unit meetings, we’ve learned tips and techniques for organizing, tracking, and reporting our efforts from Kim and Debby in PD&E. All this is useful to you, your team, and the organization. Yet, RiV can’t do much for you if you don’t actually use it. Like most everything, RiV use becomes easier after it becomes habit; so I encourage you to practice making RiV use a habit. With a few simple clicks of your mouse, you can join seven of your colleagues (Bond, Bowen, Civittolo, Merkowitz, Nesbitt, Raison, and Romich) who have provided me proxy status. (Enabling me to view your RiV profile better enables me to more effectively help you!) Finally, if you have ideas for making this tool better and would like to provide RiV-related feedback for Thompson-Reuters, please let me know. Recognizing Our Good Work

You should have received the request for NACDEP award applications on Friday and a reminder from Rose Merkowitz earlier today. Remember; do not submit your applications directly to NACDEP. To recognize contributions within Ohio we review submissions and select noteworthy work prior to sending along for regional and national award consideration. 'Cost Sharing on Sponsored Program' Presentation - April 23:

Achieving Climate Neutrality at Ohio State - April 23:

Ohio State has committed to reducing its climate emissions to zero. Montana Policy Review Webinar Series 'Community Responses to Energy Development' continues May 1:

This webinar series is Montana-focused; however, much of what is being discussed is applicable and relevant to our approaches to this community issue in Ohio. Please plan to ‘tune in.’

The Montana State University Local Government Center is presenting a new webinar series focusing on opportunities and challenges brought on by the energy boom in northeastern Montana. The fourth webinar in this series of six will take place Wednesday, May 1, at 11 a.m. MDT (1:00 p.m. EDT). Brent Moore, CTA Community Planner, will present Planning across Borders in the Bakken. Service-Learning Research/Scholarship Panel Discussion - May 8:

  • Lunch and Learn: Latinos in Agriculture - May 10:

Statistics for Latino students enrolling in agriculture are alarming. Latinos will impact the future of our society and will have the potential to impact agriculture. Given the rapidly changing demographics and the low numbers of Latino students entering agriculture, it is time to explore ways to address this crisis. Join in beginning a dialog on exploring ways of working together to engage in a deliberate and collaborative effort to improve Latino representation in agricultural related careers. This presentation will take place May 10 from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Nationwide & Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center (Room 214). Dr. Jamie Cano and Tyler Agner (ACEL) will present.   • A Post-Racial US? - May 21:

Many believe that the election of an African American (more precisely bi-racial) to the highest office in the U.S. indicates the U.S. has entered an era in which race is no longer a determinant in shaping the life fortunes and experiences of people of color (Donnor & Brown, 2011). Others (cf. Bonnilla-Silva, 2012) disagree with this position. These contradictory perspectives make it difficult to determine whether or not the U.S. has entered a post-racial era.

Join Joseph Maiorano on May 21 as he facilitates the next CFAES Diversity Catalyst Team’s Community Dialogue—“A Post-Racial Era in the US?” The goal of this event is to increase participants’ awareness regarding a specific issue of diversity and multiculturalism—the marginalization of individuals and groups of minority-status populations. The outcome for participants may be improved knowledge, attitudes and skills for struggling against our own bias and privilege, and improving interactions with others who are different from ourselves. OSU Extension Administration is again making grants available to support innovative outreach and engagement work with Ohioans, interdisciplinary work, and initiatives that, once seeded through this funding, will expand Ohio State’s engagement and OSU Extension’s work with the community. Call for Commentaries: Food Systems Research Priorities - Due June 5:

The Journal of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Community Development is soliciting commentaries on food systems research priorities for the next five years to be published in the 2013 summer issue. Farm and consumer organizations, research groups, agencies, and any other stakeholders are encouraged to prepare commentaries on what they feel are the key applied research priorities for the community development aspects of food systems. They are interested in helping fill gaps in research and the literature, and this call for commentaries is intended as a way to solicit ideas for research over the next few years.

Consider networking with colleagues or kindred organizations to produce a joint commentary that briefly reviews the current literature and then identifies specific research gaps, needs, and/or opportunities. These priorities can cover one particular issue or component of food systems, or cover a more broad range of issues. Examples of topical areas might include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Beginning farmers, retaining family farmers
  • Community-based sustainable production
  • Labor (e.g., farm labor, processing plant workers, foodservice workers)
  • Organizing value chains, food hubs, webs, networks and the like
  • Land use, farmland protection, farm-neighbor relations
  • Food security, justice, sovereignty
  • Community food waste reduction or recycling
  • Community development techniques, strategies, approaches to food systems work
  • Food systems education pedagogy
  • Issues of gender, race, and power in the food system
  • Metrics and indicators of progress and impact
  • Census data collection

Submit a query (edited but not peer-reviewed; query form required) of 2,500 words maximum to Duncan Hilchey that outlines the focus of your commentary as well as prospective collaborators. Submissions are due June 5. The updated process for submission and peer review of OSU Extension materials for publication is posted on the CD website on the CD Professionals page. Also included are the fillable PDF 'Review of Materials' and 'Materials Request' forms. Discovery Themes Faculty Advisory Boards at Work:

The Faculty Advisory Boards for Ohio State’s Discovery Themes have been formed and are now identifying potential areas for investment in faculty expertise that will complement university strengths in the themes of Energy and Environment, Food Production and Security, and Health and Wellness. The Discovery Themes will allow Ohio State to build on its unique strengths through the addition of some 500 new faculty in theme and cross-theme areas by 2022. The boards’ efforts will be made public later this semester, and the university community will be broadly engaged in refining their recommendations. Strawberry Growers Workshop - May 16:

Strawberry growers can learn about new production methods and techniques that can help them extend their growing season and boost on-farm profits during a strawberry plasticulture workshop to be held May 16 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at South Centers in Piketon. Summer 2013 Non-credit Workshops at Ohio State’s Stone Lab begin July 14:

Stone Lab’s non-credit workshops are your chance to get a taste of island learning on Lake Erie! Courses include Outdoor Photography, Lake Erie Sport Algae Identification, Dealing with Cyanobacteria, and Fish Sampling Techniques. Workshops last one to three days and are open to the public.
