AD Update:

April 3 Unit Meeting ‘To Do’ List

Last week we identified a few items you could address in preparation for our April 3 unit meeting. Those items are expanded in more detail this week to enable you to make the most of your face-to-face time with colleagues that day. 

  • Scan the Effective Meetings Manual put together by Ann Massaro (University Office of HR) that was discussed in the February 25 Weekly Wire. It contains some good stuff on how to get the most out of meetings.
  • Take a look at CarmenConnect and Buckeye Box. We’ll focus on how you can use these tools to support your collaborative efforts.
  • Think about the questions and/or issues you may have run into using Turnitin (discussed in the January 22 Weekly Wire).
  • Think through the following ‘fireside chat’ questions provided to Keith Smith last week. Identify follow up questions to these or new questions that come to mind.
    • What does Extension in Ohio look like (number of and types of people, programs, etc.) five and ten years from now? 
    • In what area(s) do you see Community Development focusing five years from now? Ten years from now?
    • What is your vision for serving residents in urban Ohio, especially given both capacity limitations and increased interest in Extension by legislators representing metropolitan areas?
    • What more can the CD unit do to solicit funding to support current and additional positions? What financial avenues (beyond those currently being tapped) are viable options of financial support?
    • Being the smallest program area in terms of FTEs, what can we do to ensure vacated positions are re-filled? 
    • What is the ideal ratio of County-funded Educators to Field and/or State Specialists in CD?
  • Review the proposals put forth to advance our efforts in Collaboration, Funding, and Marketing (linked here and posted to our Facebook CD Chat page last week). Prepare to explain the proposal you helped develop and think through the questions you’d like to ask those that developed the other two proposals.
  • Reflect on your ‘core’ and ‘signature’ program team efforts as well as your individual priorities and/or program proposals since we last met. Prepare to provide a brief update.

Your attention to the items above should prepare you for our day together (the most recent agenda is attached). I am hopeful that working as a team we are able to strengthen your individual, your team and our collective efforts in a fast-moving and engaging environment that enhances productivity and boosts morale. Montana Policy Review Webinar Series: Community Responses to Energy Development continues April 10:

This webinar series is Montana-focused; however, much of what is being discussed is applicable and relevant to our approaches to this community issue in Ohio. Please plan to ‘tune in.’

The Montana State University Local Government Center is presenting a new webinar series focusing on opportunities and challenges brought on by the energy boom in northeastern Montana. The second webinar will take place Wednesday, April 10, at 11 a.m. MDT (1:00 p.m. EDT). Bret Smelser, Mayor of Sidney, will present 'Weathering the Storm: Community Responses in Sidney, MT.' The next webinar in the series will take place on Wednesday, April 24, at 11 a.m. MDT (1:00 p.m. EDT).  Judy LaPan, Administrator of the Richland County Health Department will present Healthy People in Healthy Communities: A Richland County Initiative.

RSVP by April 9 for Energize Ohio Signature Program Train-the-Trainer Workshop (April 15):

Extension Educators throughout Ohio are in an ideal position to educate communities on the potential impacts of energy development and support them through the transition. To better understand what role you as an educator can play to address energy development issues in your community, attend the Energize Ohio Signature Program Train-the-Trainer Workshop on April 15 at the Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center (Gehres Room) from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  The overall objective of this workshop is to provide OSU Extension Educators a comprehensive understanding of energy development in Ohio and how the Energize Ohio Signature Program addresses the opportunities and challenges through research-based educational programming. Local Food Hub Workshop - April 10:

A Local Food Hub Workshop will be conducted on April 10 at OSU South Centers (Room 160) in Piketon. This meeting is for stakeholders working on growing local growers for workforce, business, and economic enhancement through regional food hub development. Next Local Foods Networking Teleconference - April 11:

The OSUE Local Foods Signature Program Team is conducting quarterly Local Foods networking teleconferences for any Extension faculty and staff. The goal is to share resources, identify potential areas of collaborations, etc. Call-in instructions will be emailed a week prior to each call. The next teleconference will take place on April 11 at 9:00 a.m. The remaining 2013 teleconferences will take place at 9:00 a.m. on July 11 and October 10. Sustainable Water Management in the Great Lakes Region Short Course - April 22-30:

This distance-based short course will be conducted online April 22 through April 30 and will address the impacts of climate change on water resources in the Great Lakes region and watershed-level approaches to community resilience. Participants will gain an understanding of water-related impacts of climate change in the Great Lakes region, more sustainable approaches to water infrastructure planning, and practical tools for water professionals to empower communities to take action at the watershed level. This is a multi-state, multi-organization initiative with funding provided by the Great Lakes Regional Water Program. Collaborators include The Ohio State University, Michigan State University, the University of Wisconsin, the River Network, Ohio Sea Grant, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Professional Development Workshop for Outreach and Engagement Staff - May 10:

The Office of Outreach and Engagement is hosting a professional development workshop for outreach and engagement staff from across the university. “Boundary Spanners: A Framework for Capacity Building, Quality Improvement, and Professional Development for Outreach and Engagement Staff,” will be facilitated by representatives from the national Engagement Scholarship Consortium and will take place from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on May 10 at the Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center. Food Innovation Center Grant Proposals due April 25:

The Food Innovation Center (FIC) announces its second annual Innovation Initiative competition. Awards earned will support multi-college teams building on the center’s existing team awards or in new collaborative research projects. FIC seeks new team research approaches in the areas of food security, behavior change campus and community nutrition, value-added foods, functional foods, commercialization of food intellectual property, or nutrition and immunity. Up to $50,000 in direct costs for one year per award may be requested, and as many as four high-quality projects may be supported. Proposals are due to by April 25 at 5 p.m. For more information, visit:

Pre-Proposals for Sea Grant's Biennial Large Grants Program due May 16:

The Ohio Sea Grant College Program is now requesting pre-proposals for one- to two-year research projects on Great Lakes issues with particular significance to Ohio, Lake Erie, and the Great Lakes region. For details and links to guidelines, refer to Frank Lichtkoppler's post to the CD Chat page. The due date for pre-proposals is Thursday, May 16 by 5p.m. Full proposals will be due Thursday, July 18 by 5:00 p.m.



Complete Online Financial Disclosure Conflict of Interest by April 8:

The deadline to complete your online Financial Disclosure Conflict of Interest (COI) form for FY12 (July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012) is 5:00 p.m. on Monday, April 8. If you have questions about the process or why you are being asked to complete this online form, you can find answers in the FAQs available here.
