The Most Overlooked Part of Your Job
Reporting and impact documentation have been the focus of these weekly AD Updates nearly two dozen times in the past two years. Why? It isn’t enough that you think you are doing good work; you must strive to inform your funders that you are in fact meeting their objectives. If you cannot, it is logical to assume that eventually they will fund those that can. It is for this reason that accountability may very well be the most important aspect of your work. You have the LOGIC Model to help you think through what you are trying to achieve and how you might go about achieving it. It also helps you think through how you might assess the short-, intermediate-, and longer-term results (or outcomes in ‘LOGIC-Model speak’).
You also have a variety of methods for communicating impact, including: County Highlights; OSUE Annual Report; the CD Accountability Report; CD News (webpage); North Central Region CD Indicators Report; regular monthly, bi-monthly, or quarterly reporting you might compile and send to your supervisor; and of course, the RiV-informed Annual Federal Report, among others. Consider this, however; you need not worry about communicating via them all. Instead, I encourage you to simplify your efforts by focusing on RiV, especially the ‘Extension Teaching’ section to report program specifics. Every bit of data shared with USDA (Federal Report) originates from the RiV ‘Extension Teaching’ section. If you aren’t capturing the essence of your work here, the partner who is funding about a third of your salary has no idea you exist; and that is not good. If you have not already, open your RiV profile and make a couple of simple mouse clicks to provide me ‘Proxy’ status. Proxy status enables me to view your RiV data. Next week we’ll talk more specifically about how this can help.
Spring CD Unit Meeting - April 3
We have April 3 set aside to share, learn, and work within your smaller work groups as part of the Spring CD Unit meeting. Specific agenda details are still being worked out, but plan for a full day in the Ag Admin Auditorium. We’ll have time before lunch with Director Keith Smith (please send me your questions), as well as updates from the Summer Meeting (June 26) Planning Team, OJCEP Leadership, and more. The next Environmental Professionals Network (EPN) breakfast will be held on Tuesday, March 12, at 7:15 a.m. at the Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center. Learn from OSU's own Joseph Fiksel, director of the Center for Resilience, how better models and robust stakeholder involvement have led to more resilient and sustainable use and protection of water resources in Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay watershed. Stormwater Management Webinar - March 12:
A stormwater management webinar will be held March 12 from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. While the target audience of this webinar is marina and boatyard owner/operators, this topic is one of current significance across many fields and the practices and approaches for handling stormwater may be adapted and applied to most industrial sites. Community Development Society Webinar Series winds up March 13:
The Community Development Society (CDS), in collaboration with the Heartland Center for Leadership Development and the Community Change Network, will present its final webinar in the series titled "Urban Revitalization: Community Empowerment, Measuring Neighborhood Distress and Public Housing." Final 2013 Urban Local Food Workshop - March 16:
OSU Extension and Local Matters will present the last in their series of free urban local food workshops scheduled at the Godman Guild on E. 6th Street in the Weinland Park neighborhood next to the Columbus Campus. TourismOhio's Spring Town Hall Dates now Available:
Dates and locations have been finalized for TourismOhio’s five regional Town Hall Meetings in April. Regional meetings will be held April 16 - 25. Judges Needed for Denman Undergraduate Research Forum on March 28 - Register by March 5:
A record number of students are registered for this year’s Denman Undergraduate Research Forum, and another 150 faculty, postdocs, or graduate students are needed to serve as judges, especially in STEM disciplines and social and behavioral sciences. The time commitment on Thursday, March 28 is check-in prior to 11:30 a.m. and noon-2:30 p.m. to judge student projects. The annual Cambio de Colores (Change of Colors) Conference brings together researchers, practitioners, decision-makers, and community members to discuss the issues that Missouri, the Heartland, and other states face as a result of dramatic demographic changes. The conference program focuses and builds on the sharing of university, government, and community resources, linking academic studies to the more applied perspective and best practices of people and institutions working at the heart of the changing communities. The 2013 conference will provide state-of-the-art research and best practices that will inform participants about the multiple ways in which stakeholders are addressing the most significant and transformational demographic and cultural change in decades. Engagement Scholarship Consortium Conference - Call for Proposals due March 15:
Proposals are being sought for the 2013 Engagement Scholarship Consortium Conference, formerly the National Outreach Scholarship Conference, to be held October 6 through October 9 at Texas Tech University. This year’s conference will explore “Engaged Scholarship across Disciplines, Communities and Geography.” The proposal deadline is Friday, March 15. OSU Extension's contract for WebEx Meeting Center (25 participants or less) will expire on April 28, 2013. We will adopt the CarmenConnect platform as the webconferencing tool for use by the organization. WebEx Event Center (more than 25 participants) will remain available through November 28, 2013. Stone Lab offers Summer 2013 Scholarships & Unique Learning Experiences:
There is still time to apply for 2013 summer science classes at Stone Lab, Ohio State's Island Campus on Lake Erie.
