AD Update:

Covey’s 13 Character and Competence Behaviors of High Trust Leaders (outlined in Covey’s The Speed of Trust, 2006), were highlighted regularly in the Extension Communiqué last year. OSUE Director Keith Smith discussed Talk Straight, Demonstrate Respect and Listen First, among others, in terms of our Extension work. Each of the thirteen behaviors provides us simple and straightforward reminders of how to grow personally and professionally.

Of particular interest to me are Delivering Results and Getting Better; two of what Covey calls the ‘Competence Behaviors.’ When you are getting the right things done, making things happen and accomplishing what you are hired to do, you are ‘Delivering Results.’ Continuously improving, increasing your capabilities and developing feedback systems characterize the ‘Get Better’ behavior. This time of year we discuss individual accomplishments and plans for professional growth as part of the annual performance review. Behaviors you’d like to improve can only get better if you make them a priority.

To help me improve, I encourage you to share your honest feedback via a formal web-based survey. Expect a note in your in-box this week from Debby Lewis of PD&E who will be handling the instrumentation and data collection details similar to what is done to evaluate CEDs. I hope this effort will compliment other formal feedback systems currently in place. And as always, I welcome your suggestions for improvement via informal means too. My goal is to ‘get better,’ and I value your feedback!
