AD Update:

Improving Our Creative and Scholarly Outputs with Feedback

Our creative and scholarly outputs communicate knowledge in ways that are more ‘lasting’ than a face to face teaching and learning event. These outputs might be podcasts and webpages; or newsletters, factsheets and bulletins; or journal articles and technical reports. Furthermore, the same way our teaching abilities can be enhanced when we are informed of specific suggestions for improvement, our creative and scholarly outputs can be enhanced when our peers are given the opportunity to critique them. This is the essence of the peer review process; we solicit feedback on content and readability to make our outputs better. How this is done ranges from the blind review (where the author and the reviewer(s) remain anonymous) to the casual review (where you as the author ask a colleague to take a look at your draft materials). If the goal is to improve the creative output, both approaches have value.

When your outputs are intended for statewide distribution via Ohioline for example, a peer review is necessary (per OSUE Policy Handbook – specific guidance attached here). An ‘originality check’ is also now required prior to submission of written creative and scholarly outputs for Ohioline publication. This check is made possible by the software application ‘Turnitin’ and will demonstrate that you have appropriately credited existing publications used in generating your factsheet or bulletin. The software is now available for your use after you request a ‘Turnitin’ account via Ken Kulka (kulka.1@osu.edu). A short video tutorial is available here.

I am very much encouraged by the level of enthusiasm for creating new and revising existing factsheets and bulletins for Ohioline publication. I hope this level of output and willingness to review continues to increase. To ensure the production of high-quality creative outputs that communicate knowledge, we need both!

Finally, to help guide you through the process, please refer to the ‘Submission and Peer Review Process’ posted to the CD webpage; and to see the criteria used in reviewing your materials, please take a look at the ‘Review of Extension Educational Materials Form’ found in the handbook too.

Local Government Extension Training Webinar Recording now Available:

A recording of the Local Government Extension Training (LGET) webinar titled "The Missouri County Budget Trend Analysis System" held on January 14 is now available at: lget.org/archived-web-conferences/. Judith Stallmann, Professor of Community Development Extension, Agricultural and Applied Economics, Rural Sociology and Public Affairs, University of Missouri, presented the webinar that provided an overview of the Missouri County Budget Trend Analysis System including the electronic workbook that enables Missouri third class counties to analyze county fiscal trends from 1996 to 2009. A county can carry out a detailed study of its own budget and fiscal performance to identify factors contributing to fiscal stress and to consider actions it may want to take. The workbook also allows a county to benchmark itself against a set standard, its own past performance, or the record of another county as a gauge of fiscal performance.  More information about the workbook can be found at: extension.missouri.edu.

SCHOLARLY / CREATIVE / OPPORTUNITIES:

Call for Papers for 16th Uddevalla Symposium due January 27:

The 16th Uddevalla Symposium will be held June 13-15 at the Kauffman Foundation Conference Center in Kansas City, Missouri, with the overall theme of Innovation, High-growth Entrepreneurship, and Regional Development. The critical role of innovation and entrepreneurship in regional economic development in terms of productivity and employment growth has been well documented theoretically as well as empirically by researchers in recent decades. The specific mechanisms through which innovation stimulates regional economic development are less well established. It is often assumed that entrepreneurship in the form of new firm formation and the growth of newly established firms plays a critical role, but how, why, when and under what conditions is less clear. Empirical studies show that a limited share of new business ventures have the capacity to rapidly up-scale and to generate substantial new jobs in the regions where they are launched. From the perspective of regional policy makers, this implies that it is critical to understand what regional economic milieus are capable of generating innovations that can be the basis of high-growth entrepreneurship as well as provide the right environment for entrepreneurs to launch entrepreneurial initiatives.

The theme is divided into several special sub-themes/mini-tracks. For complete information about submitting papers by January 27, visit: www.symposium.hv.se/.

Community Development Society Conference - Call for Abstracts due February 15:

The Community Development Society's 2013 conference will be held July 20-24 in Charleston, South Carolina. The conference theme is Beyond the Boundaries: Creating Innovation through Regional Collaboration. Call for abstracts for workshops, paper/program presentations, panel sessions, and posters are due February 15. For detailed guidelines, visit: www.comm-dev.org/.

Twelfth Annual Cambio de Colores (Change of Colors) Conference (June 12-14) - Call for Abstracts due February 21:

Latinos in the Heartland: Positive Steps toward a Pluralist Society will be held June 12-14 at the Millennium Center at the University of Missouri - St. Louis. Abstracts can be submitted online now through February 21. The full Call for Abstracts is available at: www.cambiodecolores.org. Questions about submissions can be sent to decolores@missouri.edu.

The annual Cambio de Colores (Change of Colors) Conference brings together researchers, practitioners, decision-makers, and community members to discuss the issues that Missouri, the Heartland, and other states face as a result of dramatic demographic changes. The conference program focuses and builds on the sharing of university, government, and community resources, linking academic studies to the more applied perspective and best practices of people and institutions working at the heart of the changing communities. The 2013 conference will provide state-of-the-art research and best practices that will inform participants about the multiple ways in which stakeholders are addressing the most significant and transformational demographic and cultural change in decades. Information about registration, hotels, and other details will be posted in February. Visit www.cambiodecolores.org for complete information.
