AD Update:

Capitalizing on Opportunities and Addressing Responsibilities

Extension is one of 114 departments within one of The Ohio State University’s 14 colleges. As such, we are charged with carrying out high quality teaching, research (including creative & scholarly works), and service. Our contributions in these areas should demonstrate professional growth over time; growth that we document regularly via our vita. The vita provides us an opportunity to seek balance in our work in these three distinct areas. A vita also enables us to be recognized for promotion in rank; an expectation at OSU. Expectations and criteria for promotion in rank (for A&P and Faculty positions) are identified in the Guidelines and Procedures for Promotion of A&P Extension Educators and the OSUE Appointments, Promotions, and Tenure (APT) document, respectively, both found here. Regardless of your current assignment, understanding the promotion process and how to navigate it effectively will better enable you to capitalize on opportunities and address responsibilities associated with being a part of Extension and OSU. To help get your arms around this, I encourage you to consider participating in the next CD Unit Promotion WebEx scheduled for November 30 from 9-11 a.m. (call instructions below). If you have questions in mind, please send them to me prior to the call. Another opportunity for learning is the Annual Extension Promotion Workshop. Two are scheduled, December 18 and January 16, to be held at the Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center in Columbus. More info on each and registration links were shared in the November 7 Communiqué. In addition to these more formal learning opportunities, I encourage you to talk with your colleagues and feel free to call me to discuss as well.

Identifying Actions and Tactics
As part of our fall planning retreat, we brainstormed a list of 'most strategically smart' things the CD unit could do to secure its future. The goal was to identify key focus areas that we could address as a unit, working in sub-teams and small groups. We listed nearly ten and then narrowed the list to our top three using the ‘clickers.’ The three most strategically smart things we need to address are:

1.  Marketing
2.  Greater collaboration (internally) and partnership building (internal/external)
3.  External funding - broad-based funding opportunities

Recall that we did not have time to brainstorm possible tactics then. In preparation for our discussion on December 4 (from 10-noon in 370 Kottman) we have a short web-based survey to collect your thoughts (using items in an open-ended format). Before going to the questionnaire, please reflect on what you and your colleagues in the unit are currently doing to address these three items. Working together or in different ways, what might we do to enhance, increase, and improve, etc. in these areas? Your thoughts will be compiled with those of others to give us a starting point for the December 4 discussion. I look forward to your input!
