    Lakewood City Council Recognizes WIC Perks Pilot Program

    The Lakewood City Council recognized Lakewood Farmers’ Market, the MetroHealth System-Cuyahoga County Women, Infants and Children (WIC), and Ohio State University Extension for its successful partnership in piloting the WIC Perks program at their October 7 council meeting. During the meeting, Council presented a resolution thanking the partners for their dedication and success and embraced the goal of increasing access to fresh, local fruits and vegetables for families who experience food insecurity.

    Farmland Owner's Guide to Solar Leasing Now Available

    With large-scale solar energy development on the rise in Ohio, some of the state’s farmland owners are being sought out to lease their land for these projects.

    In the past two years, the Ohio Power Siting Board has approved six large-scale solar projects with generating capacities of 50 megawatts or more, and three more projects are pending approval. Typically, lease agreements between solar energy developers and landowners require a long-term legal commitment of 25 years or more.

    I’m pleased to announce that David Civittolo has agreed to serve as interim assistant director for the Ohio State University Extension Community Development program in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) at The Ohio State University. This full-time appointment is effective September 1, 2019, through August 31, 2020, or until a new assistant director is appointed. Details about the search process will be announced soon.

The Highland County Office of Ohio State University Extension is pleased to announce the inaugural festival will be held on August 16 and 17, 2019, in Hillsboro, Ohio. Germinate means to grow and the purpose of this film festival is to grow knowledge about agriculture, natural resources, and rural communities.

    Anyone who cares for or interacts with older adults will find the Elder Care Certificate Program a wealth of information about issues facing our aging population.

    This program will transform the way participants work with elders and enhance their status as caring individuals. Participants will gain expertise in dealing with the aging population, will have a better understanding of the challenges seniors face, and will be better equipped with the interpersonal tools to function as contributing members of a team.

    The South Jackson Community Gardens project grew out of an Ohio State University Connect and Collaborate Grant to reuse vacant land within the city to design and build a model urban garden and community space for food and health-related entrepreneurial activities. The project started in 2015 with collaborators from the city of Lima, Ohio State Lima, OSU Extension, and Ohio State's Knowlton School of Architecture. The goals of the project include fighting food insecurity, focusing on health and wellness, and developing vacant land.

    Photovoltaic (PV) panels are an increasingly common sight at homes, farms, and businesses across the Midwest. Declining cost of PV solar installations makes installing a distributed solar electric system enticing for many farmers. Evaluating the financial investment in solar requires careful consideration of system costs, the value of production, and operation and maintenance costs. Unfortunately, some proposals are hard to understand making it difficult to make fully informed investment decisions.
