Meet Kenzie Johnston, Extension Educator, Delaware County

Kenzie supports both Community Development and Agriculture and Natural Resources in Delaware County. While starting her career with OSU Extension in 2018, Kenzie has already presented to statewide audiences on how to enhance their organization’s message to stakeholders. Specifically, session participants were able to develop their mission statement, understand their organization from their stakeholders’ perspectives, and then better able to articulate their purpose and learn strategies for expanding and enhancing stakeholder relations.

Also, if you are looking for a great team building exercise, ask Kenzie to about the 27-9-3 training.

Have a great week and remember: "Teamwork is the fuel that allows common people to produce uncommon results."  -Andrew Carnegie

CD Professional FEATURE:

Getting to know Kenzie Johnston,
educator, CD/ANR,
OSU Extension-Delaware County

Kenzie Johnston
Located at:

OSU Extension - Delaware County
149 North Sandusky Street
Delaware, Ohio 43015

Program focus:
  • Communicating your Message
  • Leadership Development
  • Capacity Building
  • Strategic Planning
  • Marketing through Social Media
  • Creating Workplace Culture
About Kenzie:

I graduated from The Ohio State University with my bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Communication in 2016. After graduation I worked in the consumer services department for Scotts Miracle-Gro before making my transition to OSU Extension two years and two months ago (best decision ever). A few months into my career in Delaware County, I began the ACEL Online Master’s program and am on track to graduate in December. After graduation, I plan to begin the PhD program through ACEL while continuing to work in Extension. I may or may not be a Buckeye for life? Go Bucks!

On a more personal note, I am currently training to become a certified yoga instructor and will officially be able to teach my own classes in July of 2021. I am beyond excited for this new opportunity that has been given to me – as I never in a million years thought I would practice yoga, let alone teach it! When I’m not working, going to school, or doing yoga – I enjoy spending time outside either in the garden or exercising. I love going to the beach and will go any chance I get! One thing that I’ve learned throughout this past year; seek out your own good things, while you love, love, love on the people in your life!!

Kenzie's Work:

I am currently working on developing a curriculum package for Communicating your Message. This package will be available for CD professionals to use when working with stakeholders. It is going to be crucial to be able to tell your story after the pandemic is over. I will actually be presenting on this topic in February through the NACDEP monthly webinars.

The project I am most excited about working on right now is creating a leadership development program to help train Extension volunteers (master gardeners) how to be effective leaders. More specifically, I want this program to benefit all Extension stakeholders across the state. My greatest hope is that we are able to train and retain more volunteers to help tell the Extension story.

You can reach Kenzie at johnston.589@osu.edu or 740-833-2030.
Our next feature will spotlight Scott Hardy,
Extension educator,
Ohio Sea Grant College Program.

Implicit Associations, Insidious Assumptions: Unintended Manifestations of Bias in Everyday Life - October 23:

This 2-hour, interactive webinar on October 23 at 2 p.m. will provide an overview of the various types of bias that humans experience with an emphasis on implicit bias. Participants will explore how our socialization process leads to the formation of conscious and unconscious associations, stereotypes, and prejudices that can influence how we treat others in unintended ways. Participants will learn common ways that bias manifests in the form of subtle microaggressions and identify strategies that can help reduce the impact of implicit biases.

Prior to the webinar, participants will be asked to complete several online Implicit Association Tests. The IAT is a tool that has been shown to predict discriminatory behavior in certain conditions and can be helpful in uncovering hidden biases. An opportunity for discussion of test results and their implications will be provided during the webinar.

This event is free and open to all OSU students, staff, and faculty. It will not be recorded. Register here.

Stand Up, Speak Out! How to Interrupt Bias by Being an Active Bystander on November 17 will build upon the knowledge in this webinar.
