Professional Association Leadership Opportunities – Ohio JCEP and NACDEP
If you are even remotely interested in practicing leadership and/or deepening your level of engagement with colleagues and our professional associations, please seriously consider being a nominee to either Ohio JCEP or the national NACDEP board. Both provide significant opportunities to network with others and guide the profession.
Amanda Osborne will conclude her two-year term on the Ohio JCEP board as the CD President in a few months. Meghan Thoreau (currently Vice President) will assume the role of President and a new VP will be elected, taking office in January 2019. As we discussed at the September CD in-service, it is anticipated that Ohio’s professional associations will play a more prominent role in supporting Extension professionals in the future. Please feel free to contact Amanda (osborne.414), Meghan (thoreau.1), or me (davis.1081) if you are interested in learning more about Ohio JCEP and the CD VP/President role. In December, elections with be held for four distinctly different national NACDEP board roles:
- President Elect (3-year commitment)
- Secretary (1-year term)
- Treasurer (2-year term)
- North Central Region Board Representative (2-year term).
Responsibilities of each role differ widely, and each offers widely different opportunities to lead, learn, and contribute to the long-term health and sustainability of the Extension CD profession. If you would like to learn more, please feel free to contact your OSU Extension colleagues who have served or are currently serving in each of these roles: President-David Civittolo; Secretary-Julie Fox; Treasurer-Nancy Bowen, Greg Davis; North Central Rep-Brian Raison, David Civittolo. Nominations are due to Trudy Rice, NACDEP Past President and nominating committee chair, no later than November 1.
OTA Winter Conference Teaching Opportunities
Many of us work with Ohio’s township trustees. As you know, they are elected officials (3 per township) who number nearly 5000 in total in Ohio. The majority of them attend the annual OTA winter conference held at the Columbus Convention Center where many of us have had the opportunity to talk with them about things like working with the local media, economic development tools and strategies, and community planning, for example.
At this year’s conference, OTA has invited us to teach on the following:
- Building Sustainable Communities – Wednesday, January 30 from 1 – 2:15 p.m. and again on Friday, February 1 from 3 – 4 p.m.
- Conducting Effective Meetings – Wednesday, January 30 from 2:30 – 3:45 p.m. and again on Friday, February 1 from 1:45-2:45 p.m.
Class sizes typically range from 30-60 and they are a very engaged and enthusiastic audience. With several thousand attendees expected every year, OTA likes to get their program nailed down early. So, if you are interested in teaching or co-teaching either of these topics, please let me know ASAP. And if your schedule enables you to teach only one day on one of the topics, that’s fine too.
FINAL CALL: November 1 Deadline for Raymond A. Schindler Excellence in Community Development Extension Award Nominations
Excellence balanced across Teaching, Research (including creative and scholarly work), and Service is the goal and expectation. To see what that looks like, take a quick look at the accomplishments of your CD colleagues who are previous and deserving recipients of the Raymond A. Schindler Excellence in Community Development Extension Award. Of course, if you would like to discuss how you might better attain balance, let’s schedule a visit!
The $1,000 cash award recognizes a CD Extension professional for significant programmatic strengths, major contributions and innovative approaches achieved over the course of their Extension career.
November 1 is the submission deadline for nominations. This year’s recipient will be announced during the OSU Community Engagement Conference held at the Ohio Union on January 24, 2019, from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

Integrating Philosophical and Economic Perspectives on Well-Being - November 2:
When economists and philosophers talk about human well-being, are they talking about the same thing? This conference, on Friday, November 2, in 165 Thompson Library on the Columbus campus, aims to foster interdisciplinary understanding and collaboration between philosophers and economists who are interested in well-being.
It will feature an eminent philosopher who is well-versed in economics (Daniel Hausman, Wisconsin) and an eminent economist who is well-versed in philosophy (John Weymark, Vanderbilt), each of whom will give a presentation explaining how his discipline studies well-being in terms that are clear and intelligible to members of the other discipline. The conference should be of interest not only to philosophers and economists, but to anyone interested in human well-being. For more information visit the Center for Ethics and Human Values' site. |On November 15, from 7:15 to 9 a.m., Let's Make Biking Work will be held at the Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center.|
This EPN Breakfast program will involve exploring the regional vision and strategic efforts underway to improve bicycle commuting and to link biking with a variety of urban transit options, including bus, greenway, pedestrian, and other transportation systems. Bike technicians from Paradise Garage will be on hand during this program's networking session to provide winter weatherization consultation and help you have a comfortable commute to and from work in the upcoming seasons! Polar Archives Research Award - Proposals due November 1:
The Polar Archives Research Award is available to graduate students, faculty and independent scholars, with or without a current institutional affiliation. The award is $5,000 and may be used to defray travel expenses, living expenses or research costs. Applicants must also live outside of the Columbus metropolitan area and more than 60 miles from Ohio State's Columbus campus to be eligible. The deadline to apply is Thursday, November 1. 2019 Extension Leadership Conference - Proposals due November 9:
|The Extension Leadership Conference will be held February 6 - 7 in San Antonio. This year's theme, "Cultivating Leaders," will focus on developing leaders at the local, state and national level. The keynote speaker will be Grace Gorrell who will be speaking about "Leading with Grace."|
The planning committee has decided to extend the deadline until November 9 to submit proposals. Submissions may be made by going to the JCEP website. The website also contains information about the rubric that will be used to evaluate submissions.

REMINDERS / UPDATES / NEWS:
University Email Service (UES) Access Changes for Employees Leaving Ohio State:
Currently, employees who leave the university on good terms have emails forwarded to a designated email of their choosing for 60 days regardless of Lifetime Email Forward Service (LEFS) eligibility. Effective November 7, 2018, employees leaving the university will immediately lose access to their University Email Service (UES) mailbox and will not have any email forwarding allowed for 60 days.
This change is inclusive of LEFS eligible users, including former employees. After the initial 60 days following separation, former LEFS eligible employees will be able to choose the option for LEFS; however, they will no longer be automatically changed. Exceptions will be if the department/college places a request with the Data Access team to not have a particular former employee receive this privilege for business reasons. All interaction with former employees will need to be made through their personal/home email address on record, accessible to HRPs. To note, it is important to verify the forwarding personal/home email address on record to confirm it is not an *@osu.edu* or *@.ohio-state.edu* address.
