AD Update:

Maximizing Resources by Focusing Communication and Marketing Efforts

Previously we focused on expanding our efforts to communicate program activities and impact with the much larger world networked via social media. We’ve also discussed the need to grow our non-traditional funding (e.g., the ‘other’ funding that includes grants, contracts, donations, etc.). What tool can enable us to better address both of these areas? Look at item number 17 on the list below: A plan for our unit communications and marketing.

You may recall that we identified marketing as a key focus area well over a year ago (the rainy October 2012 Retreat in Mansfield). Since that time, a subcommittee led by Raison and Romich offered up possible approaches for addressing this issue; one of which involved commissioning the facilitation of a unit communications and marketing plan. We’ll consider a proposal from VanMeter Consulting for the creation of such a plan when we come together as a group on Thursday in the Wittmeyer Conference Room at the Waterman Farm Headquarters Building – 2490 Carmack Road. (You may remember Don VanMeter from recent county levy campaign work and/or the FCS communication and marketing effort initiated in 2013).

Thursday’s unit meeting agenda also includes time for brainstorming on our Funding and Collaboration approaches. We’ll have Director Keith Smith with us for lunch and there will be at least 60 minutes for your team breakout discussions (e.g., ‘core’ and ‘signature’ program teams, factsheet writing/revision teams, ‘small grants’ teams, etc.). Before Thursday’s meeting, please consider how your team efforts could be advanced in this face-to-face time and coordinate the available time with your teammates – Keith may choose to sit in on the various team discussions. See you in a few days!

Welcome New CD Educator

Finally, a warm welcome to Morgan Taggart (taggart.32) who began her duties as the new CD Educator in Cuyahoga County on February 3. You may know Morgan for her urban agriculture work having previously served as an ANR Program Coordinator in Cuyahoga County for the past eight years. Plan to get better acquainted with Morgan at Thursday’s CD unit meeting.

NCRCRD "Take Out Menu" Webinar - March 20
Presenters: Bowen, Moss and Romich

  • March 20 (1:00 p.m.) - "On-Site Renewable Energy Development as a Business Retention & Expansion Strategy"

The U.S. Department of Energy projects that increased generation from renewable energy (excluding hydropower) will account for 32 % of the overall growth in electricity generation from 2011 to 2040. Recent trends indicate that distributed generation applications will play an important role in meeting future electricity needs. Utilizing renewable energy resources is one way for businesses to control energy cost, allowing them to remain profitable and expand, while minimizing their environmental impact. The overall objective of this session is to demonstrate how Extension professionals can deliver outreach and education programming focused on distributed generation, net metering, and renewable energy development to businesses in their community.

Presenters, all from Ohio State University Extension - Community Development, are Nancy Bowen-Ellzey, assistant professor and Extension field specialist in community economics; Myra Moss, associate professor and Extension educator; and Eric Romich, assistant professor and Extension field specialist for energy development.
