AD Update:

Extension CD and the West Side Market

Throughout much of 2013, the north central CD program leaders have focused conversations on how we might better meet programming needs in the region. Collaborating across state lines, cost recovery practices and each state’s areas of specialization were key discussion items. We generated a draft protocol to guide how we might work better together, and I personally believe there is much to be gained by giving this a try.

You may recall I mentioned this effort during our CD Retreat in Cleveland a couple of weeks ago using the terms ‘program market’ and/or ‘take out menu.' Here’s a bit more info: Like Cleveland’s Westside Market and its various vendors offering fresh meats, fruits and vegetables; our ‘market’ is now open and requires that we display our wares to potential buyers. You can display your wares (programs) by signing up for a NCRCRD-sponsored ‘take out menu’ webinar. Think of the webinar as your booth at the Westside Market with one difference being that your booth offers only one program (each of your programs is featured in its own 20 minute webinar). In the webinar you are describing the program, what it entails, how long it might take from start to finish, what it aims to accomplish, how much local involvement is necessary, cost, etc. The webinar is your chance to pitch your program to ‘buyers’ – our colleagues in other states who need what we might have to offer. Similarly, we may know of program needs in Ohio that we are unable to address so we would ‘go to market’ in hopes of finding the program from colleagues in neighboring states. It is as simple as that.

Ideally, using this approach will help us to expand our programmatic reach to address unmet needs in other states and identify colleagues from other states to address unmet program needs in Ohio. I know we have programs in Ohio that other states do not. Many of them have programmatic expertise in areas that we do not. Our teams are ideally suited to try out this approach. You may have individual programs too that you are willing to take on the road. In either case, please be thinking of the various 20 minute program pitches you might want to make and prepare to schedule a time with Scott Loveridge (loverid2@msu.edu) to go to market. Also, please remember to check out market offerings when you see the take out menu webinars posted (live and/or recorded). This is a new approach for sure, but one we want to give a real try. If you have questions, please let me know. We will plan to discuss this more when we meet on December 3, too.
