Summer Unit Meeting: Final Preparations
Next week (Wednesday, June 26) the CD Unit will be meeting in Harrison County. Our day begins at 9:00 a.m. at the farm of Dick and Kaye Clay (on U.S. 22 about a mile east of the U.S. 22/S.R. 800 junction) and I sincerely thank Mike Lloyd, Cindy Bond, and Eric Romich for putting together what looks to be an informative and interactive event. Other tour stops include the Harrison County Community Hospital, the Court House, and the Cadiz Industrial Park to meet with the MarkWest Fractionator (wet gas processing) folks. From the looks of the tour map, after the Clay Farm tour stop we travel about 15 miles east to Cadiz where the remainder of the tour stops are within a couple of miles of each other. Remember, you will want to wear your long pants and hard, enclosed shoes for this meeting. Other required safety gear will be provided. The formal events of the day are scheduled to adjourn at 3:30; but for folks who are interested in learning more about energy produced by bio-digesters, we have an option to tour the Quasar facility at the Wooster campus from 12:45 to 2:45 on June 27 as part of the ANR Summer In-service as well.
I encourage you to do a little homework in preparation for this meeting. Like checking out the tour books and online reviews before going on vacation to someplace new, an hour or two spent in preparation can make the actual time spent at the event much more worthwhile. I’d recommend turning to your colleagues who have worked in this area via theirOhioline Factsheets on these shale gas-related topics. The OSU Subsurface Energy Resource Center (SERC) webpage would be helpful too. I’d give five stars to the SERC’s Shale Library page.
Another useful resource, with applications far beyond some simple prep for a field trip, is the Headwaters Economics Socio-economic Profiles. Since first learning of its existence years ago, I have used this tool to generate detailed socioeconomic reports of communities, counties, states, and regions (you can aggregate data in a multitude of ways). It saves you the trouble of searching for data through the federal sources such as Bureau of Economic Analysis, Bureau of the Census, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the U.S. Department of Labor, for example. Data from all of these data sources and others are compiled via this free software that runs in Excel from your desktop (Mac and PC compatible too). Its data is updated annually. If your needs are more basic and/or you aren’t interested in loading and learning the software, you can get county data benchmarked to U.S. data too. In two clicks, I generated a comprehensive 44-page Harrison County profile by clicking on the ‘Print Ready County Reports’ link from the Headwaters Economics Socio-economic Profiles. The reports include explanations of the data being shared, the methods used in tracking and/or estimating the data, why the metrics being reported are important, and the data source. It is really a comprehensive profile that could easily be used as an instructional tool when working with community groups. I very much encourage you to check it out!
SPSS Statistics, Amos and NVivo Licenses expiring June 30 - Renew Now!
If you own SPSS Statistics, Amos, and/or NVivo software site licenses, they will be expiring on June 30. Please renew as soon as possible using these instructions. First you will place your order on the Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) website. They will email you a request number (REQ) and a request item number (RITM) to which you will refer in your eRequest. Once the eRequest is approved, the OCIO will email you an authorization code and instructions on how to download your software. Stone Lab 2013 Summer Guest Lecture Series:
Tune in for the 2013 Stone Lab Guest Lecture Series, where Lake Erie researchers and agency officials will provide a first-hand look at the Lake Erie ecosystem and the issues it faces. The lecture series continues on June 20 and each subsequent Thursday through August 1, except for the first week of July when the lecture will be held on Tuesday, July 2. Research lectures begin at 7:00 p.m., and keynote lectures begin at 8:00 p.m. The schedule includes the following keynotes:
- June 20 - "Battle of Lake Erie: How Lake Processes Contributed to Perry's Victory"
- June 27 - "Solving Lake Erie's Nutrient Loading and Harmful Algal Bloom Problems" and "Designing Restoration Efforts and Sustainability Initiatives that Work: Insights from the Social Sciences"
