AD Update:

It Will Be What You Make of It

The past few updates have focused on giving. That theme continues this week, but instead of giving via the Campus Campaign, we focus on giving via your professional association. I turned over the NACDEP Treasurer duties last Thursday and in doing so had a chance to reflect on that experience. One key revelation: NACDEP exists because of the Extension CD profession. It (and the profession) will be what we are able to give it.

It sounds simple enough, but in what ways are you contributing? Your affiliation provides countless opportunities; from attending and presenting at our annual conferences, to serving on standing, ad hoc, and conference committees. You can serve as a board member and seek recognition for your good work via the annual awards (see reminder below). In short, preparing to turn over my board responsibilities reminded me that like most everything, you will typically get out of it what you put into it. And, while I very much enjoyed serving the NACDEP membership and being able to share OSUE-CD interests with the board, I was glad to hand the duties off to someone else who was willing and able to give. And, in the end I think I got a lot more out of my Treasurer experience than I probably had to invest. Please consider the various ways you might be able to contribute. The future of NACDEP and our profession depend on it!

Speaking of contributing, don’t forget to submit your good work for NACDEP Award consideration. Applications are due to Rose Merkowitz on Wednesday, May 15. Check your in-box for a note from Rose last Friday. The application can be foundhere.

Finally, if you are not already listing your conference presentations/publications in your regular monthly, bi-monthly, or quarterly report, please remember to inform Sandy ( or 292-6232) for submission to the onCampuspublication. We will need your name, title of presentation, conference/journal, and date.

Interim Educational Technology Specialist for CD

Beginning July 1, Kimberly Roush will be working as our Interim Educational Technology Specialist, serving as the primary contact for CD. We will be getting to know Kimberly better in the next few months and more specifically how to engage with her. Congratulations, Kimberly! We look forward to working with you.

The CD Directory is being updated. Last Thursday you were emailed a copy. Please check your information and let Sandy know by Friday, May 17, if you have any changes. A revised copy will be sent out next week.



Human Subjects Research Exempt Forms Help Session - May 15:

Investigators, graduate students, and research staff are encouraged to attend a help session on the exempt application from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, in 117 Research Administration Building. Office of Responsible Research Practices staff will provide an overview of the application and will explain the types of human subjects research that are exempt from IRB review. CFAES Staff Advisory Council 2013 Staff Professional Development Award Applications due May 28:

Do you need assistance to offset costs associated with professional development and staff career goals? Your CFAES Staff Advisory Council (SAC) is now accepting applications for its staff professional development award. This award can be used for up to $200 in expenses.  Application forms are due to Shelley Whitworth by Tuesday, May 28. Recipients will be notified by the committee. Advanced Strengths Development Workshop - June 4:

Gaining a deeper understanding of your strengths and how to utilize them at work increases your chances of success and will help your team and organization grow. Each person has a unique combination of strengths that, when utilized, helps one perform at his or her best, overcome obstacles, and capitalize on the strengths of one's teammates. In this advanced strengths workshop, participants will receive their complete profile of 34 strengths. To participate in this workshop, you must have attended a StrengthsFinder awareness workshop (where your top five strengths were revealed). Beth Flynn will facilitate this workshop on June 4 from 9:15 a.m. to noon in room 105 of the Agricultural Administration building. Registration fee is $125 per participant. Register at:

National Extension Tourism Conference to be held in Detroit - August 6-9:

The 2013 National Extension Tourism Conference (“Tourism – Building Lasting Relationships”) will be held August 6 - 9 in Detroit at the DoubleTree Suites Downtown-Fort Shelby. This conference is only held every other year and rotates around the country, so don’t miss it when it's this close! Keynote Speaker will be Ted Lee Eubanks of Fermata, Inc. General Session Speakers include George Zimmermann of Travel Michigan, James F. Falk of Sea Grant, and Craig Wood of Extension Foundation. There will be many breakout sessions and off-site learning opportunities. Target audience includes Extension professionals, university research and teaching faculty, students, tourism professionals, and community officials. Galaxy IV Conference Registration Delayed:

The opening of registration for Galaxy IV has been delayed. They are in the process of adding the final pieces of content to the system and hope to begin final testing by the end of the week. You will receive an email when registration is open. In the meantime, here is a "Delayed Registration FAQ" based on questions they are receiving.

  • Where is my association staying? You are free to stay at the hotel of your choice but if you wish to stay at the hotel designated for your association, please note the information below:

2. Renaissance- NEAFCS
3. Marriott City Center- NACAA
4. Wyndham- ESP and NACDEP
5. Doubletree- ANREP

  • Can I reserve my room ahead of registering for galaxy? No, you must reserve your rooms during registration. There are rooms being held for the conference and room availability will not be a problem.
  • Can I reserve my room myself at the hotel? No, the hotel is coordinating all room reservations through the reservation system. Once you register your reservation request will be sent to the hotel and they will provide a confirmation number for your reservation which will be sent to you. Please review your reservation information closely upon receipt to make sure the reservation dates and room type are accurate.
  • What if my registration fee is being paid using funds that must be spent before June 1? We will assist those who must spend money before June 1st with registration prepayment. Please contact Laurie Yearick at 814-865-8301 to process your early payment. This will not register you for the conference. You must go in and register when registration opens and your early payment will then be applied to your registration.
  • What if I want to reserve a suite at the hotel? Suites are not an option in the registration process. If you would like a suite, please contact Mary Seaton at

2013 Excellence in Extension and Extension Diversity Award Nominations Requested by May 15:

The program and personnel subcommittees of the Extension Committee on Organization and Policy are accepting nominations for the 2013 Excellence in Extension and Extension Diversity awards. These awards are designed to recognize a select group of Cooperative Extension professionals who excel at Extension programming; make a positive impact on constituents served; achieve organizational changes that support diversity, pluralism, and innovation in programs; and provide visionary leadership for the system. Awards available include five regional Excellence in Extension awards, the national Excellence in Extension award, and the national Extension Diversity Award. The awards are presented during the annual meeting of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU), this year held November 10-12 in Washington DC. Travel stipends up to $1,000 per award, not per individual, are provided by USDA NIFA.

Only two Excellence in Extension nominations per institution will be accepted. Only electronic submissions will be considered by the respective review committees; and nominations must be submitted through a unique link – in Ohio, that is via Keith Smith’s e-mail. Those who are selected to complete a nomination form from Ohio will be asked to prepare the nomination packet by May 29, so OSUE Administration can work with the nominees to finalize the submission before the June 1 deadline.

Joe Heimlich contributes to National Audubon Society Conservation Publication:

A new publication, Influencing Conservation Action: What Research Says about Environmental Literacy, Behavior, and Conservation Results, makes research about how to best engage people in conservation readily available to practitioners. Developed by the National Audubon Society in partnership with Environmental Education & Training Partnership (EETAP), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, TogetherGreen, and the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE), the publication provides accessible research about behavior change . . . what motivates people to take action and how to plan conservation projects that reflect "what works." Foreign Language Center launches Free Language App:

The Foreign Language Center has launched a new, free language app, Expand Your World, allowing users to enjoy a cultural, demographic, economic, and linguistic journey through the 31 languages taught at Ohio State. The app contains a short introductory video, a quiz, and 25 practice audio phrases in each language. This self-contained app does not require any network access to enjoy high-definition audio and video content and is compatible with both iOS and Android tablets and phones. Summer Semester Dependent Tuition Assistance Deadline - June 7:

Applications for Dependent Tuition Assistance (DTA) must be submitted each term for each dependent. Faculty and staff can apply online using Employee Self Service. Summer 2013 term enrollment window closes on Friday, June 7. Paper DTA applications are also available for those who cannot enroll online. Autumn 2013 term enrollment window opens Monday, June 24.
