AD Update:

April 3 Unit Meeting Follow-Up

If you are like me, you feel a renewed energy this time of year. I always have for as long as I can remember. The longer days meant school would be out soon, and the warmer temperatures enabled countless activities outdoors. After last week’s unit meeting, I am feeling excited about our work to date and what lies ahead. I sense a real camaraderie when we get together, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a commitment to program excellence. I think we have a much better sense of who we are as a team and what we do as a team in making Ohio a better place to live and work.

Our next step is to focus on sustaining and growing our team. The questions Director Keith Smith addressed (below) during the meeting last Wednesday relate to these endeavors. We will be addressing them over the coming months and will most likely devote a good bit of our fall planning retreat to them. In the meantime, please begin thinking about them from an individual and team perspective as well as how they relate to our Collaboration, Funding, and Marketing efforts. I hope you are as excited about our future as I am. Spring is a perfect time to be feeling energetic!

  • In what area(s) do you see Community Development focusing five years from now?  Ten years from now?
  • What is your vision for serving residents in urban Ohio, especially given both capacity limitations and increased interest in Extension by legislators representing metropolitan areas?
  • What more can the CD unit do to solicit funding to support current and additional positions? What financial avenues (beyond those currently being tapped) are viable options of financial support?
  • Being the smallest program area in terms of FTEs, what can we do to ensure vacated positions are re-filled? 
  • What is the ideal ratio of County-funded Educators to Field and/or State Specialists in CD?

Our work together requires investment. You invest your time and energy. I can cover your mileage to and from the meeting location. Remember to use the following chartfield info on your April mileage log and eRequest:  (Org) 55120, (Fund) 530801, (Account) 63401, (User Defined) QTR113. 

Also, remember to use the attached Key Functions of the CD Office if you have any input you’d like to share to help Sandy and me prioritize our work. ‘Value’ the items by allocating $100 over items 1-3, and $100 over items 4-7. No need to value the bolded items – we’ll be doing them no matter what. Use the same format for lettered items under each numbered heading. If that is too confusing, feel free to use whatever system is easiest for you and send back to us by April 12. I encourage you to look for ways to prioritize the work you do as well. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:

IRB Forms Help Session April 11:

Investigators, student researchers, and staff are encouraged to attend a help session on the IRB initial application from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 11 in 117 Research Administration Building. Office of Responsible Research Practices staff will provide an overview of the Initial Review of Human Subjects Research application. Film Screening of Hunger in America - April 13:

The College of Social Work is co-sponsoring the film screening, A Place at the Table, Saturday, April 13 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the US Bank Theatre at the Ohio Union. Nominated for the 2012 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize, the film discusses a variety of intersecting aspects of hunger in America. A discussion will follow. This screening is free and open to the public. Other co-sponsors include The Ohio State Eminence Fellows, Office of University Outreach & Engagement, and the Hunger.FOOD.Health Food Security Initiative. For more information visit: csw.osu.edu.

CarmenConnect Training continues April 18:

Thanks to Ken Kulka for presenting a CarmenConnect training session during our unit meeting last Wednesday. If you need a refresher, the recording of the first webconference session held April 4 is now available. The second training session in the series of four will be held April 18 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Click here to obtain both links (to the first recording and to the meeting room for April 18). Remember, OSU Extension's contract for WebEx Meeting Center will expire on April 28, and CarmenConnect will be the organization's webconferencing tool.

Microsoft Office Classes open to University Employees:

Microsoft Office 2010 classes are offered for university employees in 200 Kottman Hall from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with a one-hour lunch break. The fee is $35 per person. Scholarships available for National Conference on Diversity, Race & Learning - May 6-7:

April 15 is the early bird deadline to register for the 19th Annual National Conference on Diversity, Race & Learning set for May 6 and 7 in Columbus at the OSU Fawcett Conference Center. This year’s theme is: “Prognosis Diversity: Prescription for Making America Whole.” OSUE Administration will sponsor ten individuals to attend both the pre-conference workshop May 6 and the conference on May 7. If you are planning on developing and submitting a proposal for a new Signature Program, review the recently approvedguidelines and note that discussions and logic model worksheets are due April 15.
