Recognizing and Developing Excellence
Professional competence and technical expertise are two elements necessary for Extension excellence. Stone and Coppernoll described in a 2004 JOE article much of what we know of as our own OSUE Competency Model developed a few years ago. Our model suggests that professional competencies can be grouped three ways: interpersonal competencies such as communication, teamwork, leadership, etc; personal competencies such as professionalism, self-direction, and continuous learning; and competencies around ‘The Business of Extension’ such as resource management, customer service, technology adaption and application, and problem solving, for example. It is exciting that we plan to recognize a colleague’s excellence with the first-ever OSU Extension Excellence in Community Development Award at the OSU Extension Annual Conference on December 5. As you reflect on the nomination criteria (i.e. significant programmatic strengths, major contributions, and innovative approaches achieved over the course of the Extension career), I hope you take into consideration these core competencies. This also is a good time to reflect on your own specific plans for strengthening your core competencies and sharpening your technical expertise. Click here to see more on the core competencies. 'Establishing a Microenterprise Lending Program' - eXtension Webinar October 11:
Nancy Bowen, OSU Extension Field Specialist, Community Economics, and Julie Miller, Wright State University Business Enterprise Center, will present a free eXtension webinar, Establishing a Microenterprise Lending Program, on October 11 at 2:00 p.m. Has your community been considering a micro-lending program? For a microenterprise development program to be successful there must be both access to capital and technical assistance. The presentation will be a "how to" on development of a micro-lending program that helps to level the playing field for entry into business ownership while strengthening rural economies. NCRCRD Heritage Tourism Initiative Webinar Series continues October 11:
Seven, one-hour Heritage Tourism webinars will present resources developed to aid communities in moving into tourism planning for themselves. The webinars are designed to each focus on one of the seven learning and sharing resource modules developed by the Heritage Tourism Initiative team. These modules can all be taken in order or participants can choose to attend those that they feel are appropriate for where their community is in the tourism development process. These are designed to provide a venue for sharing and building the resources and information to help communities use heritage tourism as a viable community economic development strategy. Modules and resources also will be available through a website.
Each session will include approximately 30 minutes of presentation and 30 minutes for question/answer and participant sharing. The team hopes that others will identify and share resources and processes that they have used.

Local Foods Network Teleconference to be held Quarterly starting October 18:
OSU Extension Local Foods Network Teleconferences now will be held quarterly starting October 18. These networking teleconferences allow Extension employees to discuss programming and in-service needs, jointly identify and/or plan educational programs, and become more knowledgeable about various issues related to local foods. Send an email message to Mike Hogan at hogan.1@osu.edu to be added to the mailing list to receive reminders and log-on instructions for the teleconferences. As specific plans for implementing the new Local Foods Signature Program are finalized, information will be shared through All-Extension emails. Look for Local Foods Roundtables to begin in 2013 on the Columbus Campus.
'Economic Recovery in Disaster-Impacted Communities' Webinar Series continues October 24:
The International Economic Development Council continues its series of six free webinars, titled Economic Recovery in Disaster-Impacted Communities. Based on real pre-disaster planning and post-disaster experience, each seminar will equip you to plan and sustain your community's economic recovery in the wake of disaster. The fourth seminar, titled Financing Critical Infrastructure and Redevelopment Projects, will be held Wednesday, October 24, from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. and will provide insight on advocacy efforts and how to access different funding resources to finance more resilient critical infrastructure and redevelopment for local economic recovery. UMAT Annual In-Service - November 2:
For any CD folks who work in urban centers, the UMAT Annual In-Service will be held on Friday, November 2 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Cleveland Metroparks CanalWay Visitor Center, [CanalWay Center, 4524 East 49th Street, Cleveland, OH 44125], right off I-77. There is no charge for the in-service, and there is $1,000 total available for travel funding (so plan to car pool). Watch for more details! Tri-State Diversity Conference - February 21-22, 2013:
The 9th Annual Tri-State Diversity Conference 'Bridges to Cultural Inclusion' will be held February 21-22, 2013 in Hebron, Kentucky. This professional development opportunity is planned for community and classroom professionals who are interested in expanding their diversity competence. The Extension programs at Kentucky State University, University of Kentucky, Ohio State University and Purdue University collaborate to offer this award-winning conference.
A variety of diversity initiatives will be addressed during workshops on topics like:
- Inclusion is Mission Critical
- Bridging the Language Gap
- Extending our Cultural “Bridge to Somewhere”
- Providing Public Space for Inter-Ethnic Networking in “New” Immigrant Destinations
- The Map to Social Justice: How Do I Become an Effective Agent for Change?
- Equipping Students for Working in a Multicultural Society

Ohio State to power Campus with Wind Energy from Ohio Wind Farm:
From the October 1st issue of OSU Today:
Ohio State on Sunday (September 30) announced it has signed a letter of intent with Iberdrola Renewables to purchase 50 megawatts (MW) of wind energy capacity from the Blue Creek Wind Farm, located in Van Wert and Paulding counties in Ohio. The purchase of clean, renewable wind energy capacity equates to approximately 25 percent of the entire Columbus campus electricity load, and is one of the single largest purchases of actual renewable energy by any university in the country. The agreement helps Ohio State take a big step toward becoming a "carbon neutral university," a commitment the university has been working toward since President Gee signed the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment in 2008. The university continues to develop and implement plans to achieve its sustainability goals, including the creation of a campus culture that embraces sustainability. Contact: Gina Langen at 688-4423.
