By all accounts, last week’s CD retreat was a resounding success. This is due, in part, to you as a highly engaged participant and to the retreat planning committee (Becky, Rose, Chet, and Sandy) in designing the agenda. Our key objectives were to:
- share openly, honestly, and build trust as a group
- increase our awareness of unit members’ scope and depth of expertise
- think through trends, issues, and their implications for our focus and the way we work, and
- advance specific program initiatives in the areas of BR&E, Energy, Local Food, and Strategic Planning.
We addressed these objectives using a variety of activities and formats; large group and small group discussions; the tried and true flipcharts and slides, and; newer ‘Clicker’ technology too. And while the constant rain limited our ability to find inspiration from the surrounding woods and trails, we had an ample supply of energy from the group that motivated us to think and collaborate in new ways. I was especially pleased with your active participation and willingness to respond to the ‘homework’ (e.g. your 60-second elevator speech, ‘most used program,’ and nugget of wisdom, etc). And, it was especially nice to see some familiar faces from days past on Wednesday evening for dinner and fellowship.
Expect to see a web-based program evaluation in the coming days. In the meantime, I hope you have had a chance to reflect on our work from last week and are excited about advancing those efforts. In addition, you may want to consider the following:
- We reviewed Lencioni’s Five Dysfunctions (2002). I prefer to think of them as five key elements of highly functioning teams. Can you build in time to consider these elements each time you engage in ‘team’ work? I challenge us to actively practice these approaches as we go about our work.
- We shared an overview of a program we have delivered often in the ‘Most used programs’ activity. Many of us have been conducting these programs for years. Is there an opportunity to update and/or enhance this program by packaging it in a more formal curricular format, perhaps in collaboration with others from Ohio or other states? I encourage you to seek out ways to build on and enhance your existing efforts, especially if it involves the development of new partnerships.
- We spent some time reflecting on the individual strengths of our co-workers and sharing how those strengths have led to practices that yielded benefits. Are you aware of whose strengths in the unit can augment yours to create a well-balanced team? Short of teaming, it may be helpful to identify a strength you would like to develop and then learn from those in the unit who possess that strength.
- Recall that Scott Loveridge, NCRCRD Director, discussed the ‘Small Grants’ program – grants of up to $20,000 are available. FYI, he plans to change the proposal deadline to sometime in December. Learn more athttp://ncrcrd.msu.edu/ncrcrd/call_for_proposals. How is your team planning to apply for these funds? If you need help in identifying team member(s) from other states, please let me know.
- In addition to the NCRCRD funding, we talked about their webinar sponsorship. Recall Myra Moss will be discussing 21 Years of First Impressions on October 2 and that there are opportunities to share and learn about a variety of topics. Average attendance is approximately 60-70 people from throughout the country (and Canada!). Learn more athttp://ncrcrd.msu.edu/ncrcrd/webinars. Scott is continually looking for webinar topics/speakers. What plans might you make to present in this webinar format?
- Using a Nominal Group Technique, we also identified three key areas important to the future of CD: funding, collaboration, and marketing. We will discuss specific tactics to advancing efforts in these key areas in the coming weeks. In the meantime, what are you doing or what might you do to contribute to gains in funding, collaboration, and marketing?
This is but a short list of items we discussed. Given what Sandy, Scott, and I observed, the time spent in your individual signature program team discussions was highly focused and productive, and I look forward to helping you advance your specific goals in the coming weeks and months.
Again, I extend my most sincere thoughts of appreciation to you. Many of you traveled quite a distance. All of us were in ‘on’ mode for the duration, which made for a tiring couple of days. Please know that your contributions were truly noticed!
Travel Reimbursement Form for CD Retreat
For those who stayed overnight at the CD Retreat, Sandy will email you travel reimbursement forms by the end of the week. You will need to complete and sign the form, attach your mileage map, and send it in for Greg's signature. CD funds paid for lodging and meals and will reimburse you for your mileage.
Community Development Cash Award
As discussed at the retreat, nominations for a new cash award, the OSU Extension Excellence in Community Development Award, will be due November 2. Specific details and nomination form will be forthcoming.

The Fall 2012 issue of the CD Quarterly News will be posted this week to the CD Web page as a 'News' item. If you have not yet submitted email addresses (as well as name and organization) to subscribe your stakeholders, please send them to Sandy as soon as possible.

2012 State of Research Address - October 11:
Caroline Whitacre, vice president for research, will deliver the 2012 State of Research address on Thursday, October 11, at 8:30 a.m. in the Wexner Center Film/Video Theater. In recognition of the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Morrill Act, which established the public land grant university, Whitacre will review the influences that created today's public research university and explore the forces that will shape the future, highlighting Ohio State research that exemplifies how the university is meeting these future challenges. The Institute for Population Research is a multidisciplinary center established in 2000 with the goal of building excellence at Ohio State in population and health research. IPR is a premier population research center with signature strengths in the study of family demography, health and health disparities, and population distribution (including immigration). IPR brings together OSU behavioral and health scientists from seven colleges and 17 departments to better understand the health and family outcomes of children, adults, and communities. The CFAES Diversity Catalyst Team announces Two New Initiatives for the 2012-2013 Academic Year:
Diversity Mini Grants: These mini grants will support teams, individuals, or student groups with new projects or ideas to enhance diversity and inclusion in their programming and or teaching efforts. All faculty, staff and student groups of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences are eligible to apply.
- Grants are up to $500 and will be awarded in November 2012 with the earliest start date in December, 2012. All funds must be used by June 30, 2013.
