The Ohio Tourism Toolbox was developed through the Ohio Tourism Team - a group of representatives from various organizations throughout the state. Ohio State University Extension provides leadership for this team. The team advances economic development in Ohio through collaborative research and education projects.
To continue growing the $38 billion Ohio tourism industry, the Ohio Tourism Team provided leadership for a new Ohio Tourism Partnership for Economic Development. Through this partnership, a new web-based Ohio Tourism Toolbox was launched during Ohio Tourism Month (May, 2009), as a one-stop resource for industry professionals and community leaders.
Tourism encompasses portions of many sectors including hospitality, transportation, retail, and entertainment. Tourism attracts temporary visitors to places where they purchase goods and services. Both rural and urban communities base their visitor attraction strategies around favorable local advantages such as a climate, history, and cultural and natural resources (International Economic Development Council).
Economic impacts can be calculated through business revenue, job creation, payroll, new business development, local and state tax revenue. Tourism also contributes to the overall image of a community, shaping the perception of a destination in the minds of visitors, future residents, and potential business owners seeking relocation sites.
Key partners include Ohio State University Extension, the Ohio Department of Development Tourism Division, and Ohio Sea Grant College Program. Additional collaborators include OSU’s Center for Consumer Service Excellence/College of Education & Human Ecology, the Ohio Travel Association, Ohio Department of Agriculture/Ohio Proud, the Ohio Restaurant Association, the Ohio State Parks/Department of Natural Resources and a growing list of Ohio Tourism Team members representing other organizations, regional groups, and universities such as Ohio University & Bowling Green State University.
