Resources: Extension Program Resources-Community Development 1996 I. Title of Program or Issue: Understanding Empowerment and Community Structure for Community Development A. Situational Statement: Community groups of all sizes recognize organization and initiation of social action does not happen in a vacuum. Understanding the concept of empowerment and the inter- relationships of the community are key components to initiating the social action process. B. Description/Educational Objectives: The presentation in its present form is a combined program that addresses the concept of empowerment, community history and pertinent components, power/leadership influences, and utilization. The program is designed for leaders, decision-makers, and residents to discuss relative information and complete activities related to community development. The focus of this program is to recognize resources, understand the concept of inter-connectedness of community components, and understand the initiation of social action. C. Suggested Time Required for Program: Suggested allotment - 4 hours with breaks Suggested Time of Year: Any time of the year D. Audience and Level of Offering: The program is most appropriate for groups (3 or more) where individuals have some relationship to one another or the group. E. Teaching Methods, Resources, Costs: Facilitation of discussion that results in self-discovery. Participant interaction for problem solving.
